WARRIORS AND HEROES: THE NAVAJO CODE TALKERS

Attending Navajo Code Talker Day for the past four years has been an incredible and transformative experience. Each visit offers precious lessons that are impossible to find elsewhere. National trips like this allow Young Marines to step out of their comfort zones, meet peers from across the country, and participate in unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The impact of Navajo Code Talker Day, the Code Talkers, their families, and the Navajo people can only be truly appreciated in person.

The Navajo Code Talkers played a crucial role in World War II by creating an unbreakable code from their native language, helping the United States capture key islands and ultimately win the war. After returning home, their contributions remained secret for many years. Eventually, they were able to share their stories and were rightfully honored for their bravery. Every aspect of the Navajo Code Talker Day trip is incredible, from the 10-hour car ride to the events and celebrations in Window Rock, Arizona, and back to San Diego!

This year, our unit invited 12 Miramar Young Marines, 2 Temecula Valley Young Marines from California, and even one New River Young Marine from North Carolina. The road trip is always a highlight, with stops at hotels, swimming pools, and interesting shops and restaurants like Bass Pro Shops, Cracker Barrel, and Famous Dave’s. Despite the long car rides, we always find ways to entertain ourselves with games and music.

Arriving at Window Rock is one of the best feelings in the world. Seeing the iconic window in the background is awe-inspiring. Navajo Code Talker Day offers invaluable life lessons from the Navajo people and senior Young Marines. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to make lifelong friends, who you might see at future Young Marines events.

One of the most important aspects of these events is earning a billet. Billets provide a unique perspective on the hard work and dedication that go into making these events successful. There are many billets to apply for, such as Young Marines Sergeant Major, 1st Sergeant, Scribe, Special Guest Escort, Photographer, Public Relations, Accountant, and Hotel/Room Coordinator. Each event has billets that match its needs, and applying for multiple billets can lead to amazing experiences.

Attending Young Marines events like Navajo Code Talker Day is a highlight of my year. It’s a chance to grow, learn, and make meaningful connections. I encourage all Young Marines to take advantage of these opportunities and apply for billets to get the most out of every event.
